U.S. plans $1 billion aid package for Georgia

advertisement

TBILISI, Georgia - A U.S. Navy ship loaded with humanitarian aid steamed through the Dardanelles en route to Georgia on Wednesday, as the Bush administration prepared to roll out a $1 billion economic aid package for the former Soviet republic.

What are we going to do? Print the money and give it to them? More waste from George W before he gets out of office. Why don't the other Euro countries pick up the tab? They are the ones that
should be worried about this situation. Not the USA. George and his cronies can't get out of office
fast enough for me. I don't care if the next president is black, yellow or green. This can't go on.

People are getting sick and tired of what is going on in the White House, Congress, Senate, State legislatures and so on. They all don't seem to have us Americans as best interest. I am truly annoyed and bothered by this, sending them $1 Billion dollars. Hell lets take that $1 Billion and continue funding that wall to seal off our borders. Our healthcare system will completely fail if we have to continue and pay for illegal immigrants healthcare. Next time my kids get sick, I'm taking them to the ER and telling them that we don't speak English and that we are immigrants with no healthcare, give them a fake name (like the illegals do) and that way I don't have to worry about paying for that bill. No, but seriously we have other issues that are more important to American Citizens than Russia and Georgia's problems.

WHY? Georgia started this mess by picking a fight they couldn't win, why are we sending them a BILLION dollars worth of aid? It's not like we have a BILLION dollars laying around. Just more money my grandkids will be paying back to China.

My heart goes out to people who need help but if I don't have money for groceries, rent and gasoline I damn well can't send them any. This country can't fulfill it's responsibilities because it's not in the budget so why are we sending $ somewhere else.

I have an idea, let's send our LEADERS to Georgia; let them rebuild the damn place, we have our own sh$t to take care of. Maybe while they're all gone doing some actual good we can finally get our sh$t right.

Steve, do you know why? Because 2000 Georgian soldiers were fighting next to our troops in Iraq. If a nation of 4.5 million sends 2000 people to help you in your war, I guess they deserve that 1b. help from us.

The most important thing any of us can do is to write a letter to our Senators and Representatives, you can go to their webpage and fill it out on one of their online forms. Tell them to start taking care of their own citizens. Georgia invaded Russian backed territory and now we are paying for it. This needs to stop!! For the person who wanted to know where their job went, it is in China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and where ever else the cheap goods are made. Check the labels of the cheap imported stuf you buy at Walmart. If you want to help yourself you first need to stop buying cheap imported products, and start demanding made in the United States; manufactured by citizens of this country not criminals who cross into this country illegal to get low paying jobs. Stand up for yourself, and don't be one of the apathetic many who sit back silently and complain. Tell your retailer's management you want made in the USA, speak with your dollars, you'll be amazed how much money you won't spend, because you really have to search for products made in the USA.

Why does the US send billions to every other country in the world when we have seniors with nothing to eat and can't afford their medicines. We have a huge percentage of people right here in the US with no health insurance.

It needs to stop. Lets secure our own country and take care of our own citizens for a change. Let someone else take care of the rest of the world for a change.

Health care! 47 million people without it and probably half of the rest are struggling to make their payments on what they have. Prices in the health care industry have increased by an average 18% over the last 8 years. Mention universal health care and you are a LIBERAL even though other countries have it. Universal health care is not the monster the Republicans make it out to be but in this information age with slick ads they and the industries that do not want it can convince people with ads that could make you not eat if they wanted to. A scary thought.

I read a study that stated most seniors cant afford food and drugs. So some of them eat cat food or dog food because it is cheaper. This is the saddest story I ever heard and we have the money to help them. Our leaders have turned there back and will not help.

              ShawnC30:

I have to share something concerning your comment about senior citizens & having to make painful choices just to live from day to day. My heart does grieve greatly for them. I may get slaughtered for this comment or I may receive some agreement. I have read many valid points of debate on this blog and many heart felt cries of need. I am afraid I am guilty of letting my emotions get the best of me when I posted a prior addition to this blog.

This news of aid to Georgia and this subsequent blog really kicked my critically thinking into gear. We all know it is just a politic game in the march of conquest. I am one of the countless Americans scraping out a living in the economy we are not thriving under. I am making difficult choices with the small amount of money I have. I can't make it stretch far enough no matter how hard I tug. I am reduced to tears more often that not when determining if I want to be homeless or keep my vehicle one more month.

Has anyone else been drawn back to thoughts of the Great Depression? Can anyone think of how the majority of common families and individuals survived those years of our nation's deplorable financial ruin? That time of history was started by the greed of the "elites" just like now. How did people get by? I grew up with my grandmother in my home who was a child during the Great Depression. She nearly starved. However, the common people banded together to share whatever they had so that as many as possible would survive. There were a few soup kitchens, a little public relief and some worker camps across the nation. However, no could count on getting assistance from the government.

It would seem that through the loss of the generation who survived during the 20's, 30's and 40's, we as the people of this great nation have forgotten the lessons they learned. The 1950's brought prosperity and relief from fear. The times starting in the 1960's brought a new awareness of "self" "me" and "I". NOT ALL Americans have bought into this supposed progression but many did. Grandparents, mothers, fathers, disabled children, the sick and the impaired became burdens instead of cherished family members. The unborn are killed off as unwanted. They were future contributors to society and tax payers! Faith in God is either considered a massive joke on humanity or something to be kept secret. Consumerism, self reliance and leisure are the names of the game. Abundance has led to apathy.

So our governmental leaders are corrupt. What's new? What are we going to do about it today? Complain and demand to be taken care of or shall we switch our focus back to what we can do as neighbors for each other? Does anybody remember one of John F. Kennedy's most famous lines from one of his marvelous speeches? "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". I do not mean to stir up political fervor, but rather revive the passion within John and Jane Q. Public on how to help each other through these hard times.

I have been part of the American workforce for 30 years. Now I can't take care of myself. Being a hardworking citizen & good neighbor to my fellowman is a huge part of my identity. I earned my college degree and paid my dues. My family sees me as less than acceptable because I did not fully attain the grand "American Dream" as they have by their own willpower. I am supposed to fix myself and not bother others.

Here I am in an apartment I cannot afford. I borrowed from the rent money to buy grocery. I fall through the cracks of every agency because I am a white, healthy adult female with no children. What could I do to join forces with another suffering American? How could I pool my resources with another's resources so we both survive? What answers are right in front of my face because all I want is someone to fix my problems for me?

Thank you for allowing me to give voice to my individual thoughts. May God Almighty help us all.

Venting on this board is a great way to let off steam. However, it doesn't mean a thing unless you write, email, call, your representatives and let them know how you feel about sending $billions to another country when we need the money here. My two cents...

I have been for many months now. I get a couple generic responses, but my rep (Sheldon Whitehouse) seems to care and answers all my questions (However there is NO proof that he actually wrote the emails, but I would hope they are his views).

I actually will do that. You are completely right about that. Nobody cares about what we say on this or any other board or blog. We need to actually get off our butts and get something done. I'm writing congress and emailing state representatives today. I have had enough.

I too get the generic email replies which really pisses me off to no end. Now I call them and read them the riot act. One time they hung up on me, so I kept calling them until someone answered. You are right though. They don't seem to care about our opinions and concerns. I live in New York and Hillary Clinton is one of my representatives. Her office is the biggest offenders when it comes to not caring.

There is a pipeline that runs from Azerbaijan to the Black Sea. If Russia gets their hands on that, they could hold the rest of Europe hostage on energy. The price of gasoline and natural gas would skyrocket on speculation alone. A billion dollars would look like chicken feed compared to what that little scenario would do to our markets. We put ourselves in this position by not developing our own sources of energy. There is a price to pay when you develop a "not in my backyard" mentality. It's called dependence. Doesn't feel good, does it?

Quiet Honeslty Rick, I don't think that either party will fix all our countries failures. Today there are too many politics that come before any real american issues. McCain and Obama can try to act like they will do so much for this country but when they get into that White House, they get slapped with a reality pill. Presidents don't have as much power as people would like to think.
It's all about Politics. There is some other reason (OIL) or something that this is really about.
That is the only reason they are sending that money to them. It's not about American's and how we feel, how many jobs we lose, how many homes we lose, who does or does not have healthcare.
Its about something above and beyond our issues. It always is.

Why is it the good ole USA always has kazillions of extra dollars laying around for other countries and we have people living on the streets. Maybe that charity should start at home. God help us.

Let me get this straight ! Their sending 1 BILLION dollars to Georgia for aid, and they complain that Palin used 27 million for a child care facility, transportation center, a sewerage system in her town when she was mayor ? I thought charity began at home !

While I disagree with a town of 6500 dollars getting 27 million via hiring a former Ted Stevens crony as a lobbyist so they could build a rail line to a ski lodge in the town Stevens lives in it is still small potatoes and it did stay in the US.

You just don't get it. Its a payoff. Americans are blind and don't see the big picture. What did the Russian President say about America? They told Georgia to start the war so it would benefit a Presidential Candidate. Were not going to point a finger at who. But there is truth behind it whether you want to believe it or not. Other countries are at war. Do we send them money to help rebuild? But in this instance as soon as it happened. We were all over it. A billion dollar payoff. Will see that money back when we elect McCain as President.Wake up and see it for what it is.We help countries that help us now or in the long run. They helped by putting fear back into America. But I won't be scared no more.Wasn't it one of McCains people who said he would benefit from another war. Wasn't it McCain who said he speaks for all Americans when this conflict started.Wasn't it McCain who got on TV threatening Russia as if he was already president. Open your eyes and see it for what it is.

Everyone here is saying the same thing; America first. Am I the only one who read about Ron Paul? I'm the only one who mentioned him. These are the exact issues he addressed. In fact, our constitution is supposed to protect the American people against this kind of misappropriation of funds. That's OUR money, and we don't get any say in how it's spent? I can't think of a more clear-cut violation of our civil rights. What ever happened to "majority rule"? I think the vast majority of Americans would vote against sending ANY money to Georgia, or to any other country for that matter.

Read the Declaration of Independence. You will find that many, if not all, of the grievances against King George addressed by the colonists, are situations every American today is forced to burden. According to the Declaration, we not only have the right, but the obligation to cast aside such government. Why are we all just laying down and taking it? We, the people, in order to form a more PERFECT UNION... remember?

As an American living in the 21st century, I can honestly say that I no longer get to enjoy the God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I do not know the experience of true liberty and justice. Instead, I must give my money to a government that will not give me the opportunity to vote on how it's spent.

Here's a thought. Why don't all of us send the Federal Government a bill for every penny we've paid in taxes over our lifetimes? We weren't given an opportunity to approve how it was spent. We definitely didn't receive the benefits from it. I think we have the right to get our money back under the "lemon law".

Right now Ron Paul don't matter. Grandpa McCain is coming out of the nursing home to run this country and lead us right down the crapper. We all know that no matter how many votes Obama gets, they will cheat him of his victory so lets start thinking about how McCain is going to help rip our country to shreds. Grandpa McCain will follow the same politics and continue sending aid to other countries and Americans both Rep and Dem will suffer. Good luck to you all on your homes and jobs, health care, you are all on your own.

I also keep saying Ron Paul. The American people just didnt want him for president. He was our only choice. But I was looking at the earmarks website: citizens against government waste.
McCain had ZERO earmarks which meant ZERO WASTE.
Obama on the other hand had: 53 earmarks @ a total of 97.4 million.

So who do you think is better for this country against government waste? I know Palin had gotten earmarks for her town/state but compared to what I had seen on the website that was chicken scratch.

No, you are not the only one who read about Ron Paul. In fact, I actually voted for him in my state's caucus. I don't agree with him on everything, but I appreciate that he looks to the Constitution when he votes and that he really understands how economics works (unfortunately, neither the DEM or GOP pres. candidate does)

I constantly suggest another tea party or a march by all Americans on DC (people hold marches and rallies there for just about everything else, why not one that demands that our government actually listen to us?)

Here's an idea. How about we use that money to help with the destruction of our own country at the hands of Hurricane Gustav? Now not only are we going to have to pay all this money to re-build but now we have to continue to endure a tough economy because we are sending 1,000,000,000 to Georgia. How about fixing our own Georgia first. I'm sure there are a few things a billion dollars could fix.

apparantly the usa has money to give away to foreigners and not its own people.Do you know in 2002 they cut out a lot of amputees from social security. If you lose both legs or both arms you get social security. If you lose an arm and a leg on opposite sides of your body you get no money. They figure you get a prosthetic for you leg,and hey -who needs an arm right??How in the hell can you put on your leg prosthetic with one arm.You dont get it if you lose an arm.You dont get it if you lose a leg.You dont get it losing a leg below the knee-I know.I lost my leg below the knee and I get 180 dollars a month from the state-thats it.The guy that hit me,it was his fault and he was found guilty over a year ago and the insurance company doesnt have to give me a thing till the trial-SO WHERE DID THAT LEAVE ME?????i LOST EVERYTHING,MY HOME,MY CAR,MY PREVIOUS JOBS DONT WANT ME BACK!!Heres what I am doing and you should do the same.I am currently talking to a canadian woman who sympathizes with me on my situation and is going to marry me so I can get good free health care in Canada!!I am ashamed of this country and dont want to be part of it any longer.HOW CAN WE "BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD"when we have armies of homeless and elderly who have worked their whole lives just to lose everything to medical bills???????Canada and UNited Kingdom take care of their people. We are more concerned with water on mars then we are concerned with the well being of americans. We are the richest country possibly ever in exhistance who doesnt make health care and education a priority????????What will become of this country??I will tell you-after letting the thrid world in,we will become the third world. Our citizens will and are becoming the third world when they arent educated and their health taken care of.The elite our ruling this country and dont care about our health care or educations which would make the country strong as hell.HOW MANY POLITICIANS WILL WE GO THROUGH TO YOU REALIZE AMERICA DOESNT GIVE A S H I T about you or I???They have health care ,big houses and good educations and live away from the war zones in the cities.I feel sorry for you-but wont be feeling sorry for you when I am finally in canada.People talk bad "about canadas health care-Of course america would portray it that way.Have you veer talked to a canadian about it??I have and its great. What I think is funny too is america is blocking some canadian web sites for dating,or someone is??Wonder who?? I wish washington and lincoln could come back and clean this country up-they might because after turning in their graves for so long they are probably just under the soil and due back any moment. (shaking my head, head hung low-walking the eff away from "america"

I Second that motion. I am so tired of the USA coming to the rescue of everyone but their own citizens. I'm not advocating that we neglect helping out our global citizens but when are we going to tackle the problems in our own back yard? We are currently faced with an ailing economy on the brink of a recession, record foreclosures, homelessness from to coast to coast, neglect of the elderly and a hundred more pressing issues to long to mention. We need to invest in our children because they are the future of this country. We need to invest in preparing our children on how to compete in this fast moving 21st century. why do we provide multimillion dollar salaries to sport stars and refuse to provide our teaches with a decent salary and the resources they need to educate our most precious commodity? Why doesn't anyone get this!

During several talk shows, Obama has been hung out to dry on his promises, since he does not tell anybody how he is going to pay for the programs.

Will someone please tell me where Mr. Bush is going to get this BILLION?

Obama cannot tell you how he is going to pay for his programs because he cannot spend the money unless congress passes them. He would be a fool if he did. Our government has three branches and he would only be one of them.

It's nice to see that on this subject, we're all on the same page! It's horrible to see money going to foreign countries when our country is in such an economic mess. $1 billion would go a long way in helping schools that are missing teachers, school nurses and administrators, getting us out of the housing mess we're in, and helping the millions who don't have health insurance.

I just can't figure out why we went to Iraq, bombed them, and now out of the courtesy of our hearts, we're rebuilding them! So, we spend trillions there. Now we have to support Georgia.

What about oil? What about unemployment? I'm sure if GW actually put $1 billion into our economy, he'd be remembered as a much better President and leader than he is. Perhaps you should read these, Mr. Bush. Oh, that's right....we give you our approval rating. Isn't yours rather dismal? Perhaps now you should realize why!

Ok, government, Dems and Reps alike....LISTEN UP! Quit the wasteful spending and take care of your own. When we have too much, perhaps we can throw some to someone else. But lets make sure its surplus and not taking out of AMERICAN'S mouths, back pockets, hands, etc!!

I totally agree with everyone here! Give our money away to help other countries, but will we have Soc Sec for us when we retire??? It is time the government (republicans!) start realizing that our people right here in the US need this money. Give that 1 billion back to the working class americans! I know for one that I could use that money! Maybe we should think about our economy here and our budgets before we start helping other countries. Do you really think any other country would really help us out?!

Republicans have had it in for social security way back to the John Birch Society days. They have undermined delayed and stole from the fund for so long it isnt even funny. We have been told not to expect too much from social security but save for retirement. Great now where do you get the savings from? What they dont tell you is they have spent money out of the fund issued paper to cover it with no interest and thats why the fund is depleted. Yet they borrow from Japan and China and pay interest
