I agree. Half of our debt is paying off the money we sent to other countries. I know they need help. Why not let some other country take over for a while?

I am sorry but I have a problem with our leaders helping out other countries before we help our selves.
We are on paper one of the richest countries in the world and we have people living on the street. We have hard working families that can not afford insurance. 30percent of the country lives pay check to pay check. We have our problems that needs to be taken care of before we send money and supplies out of here. 1 Billion would build buildings would go a long way in fixing problems at home. We need to change this and force them to address our problems

I totally agree Shawn. You have to start with yourself before you can help others. We need to fix our finances and aid our people first. I am all for humanitarian aid when it is a natural disaster. That could not be helped. but when a country fights another country on their volition, I find that very hard to do. Did any country get help after WWII? Germany, France, England, Poland etc. They were all decimated but who paid for the rebuilding of it? I don't think we did. I guess that is something to look up for reference later.
Not to mention we now maybe starting a cold war with Russia again. Our administration has made some really stupid judgement calls and I think this is the worst one. Ron Paul had it right, we are not a police country, we have to look out for us.

the reason we helped rebuild in WWII is because we blew a lot of stuff up. We did absolutly nothing to destroy this country. I don't understand why we are spending $1Billion in this country, when we could probably purchase the country for that amount.

But wake up! I don't think I need to remind you that this political system is set up for two major purposes.

          1. To move money into the pockets of the few. e.g., who got rich in the Iraq war?
          2. To give the rest of us the illusion that we have democracy. When was the last time you voted and materialistically got something you voted for?

I agree, we need to help us first but we say that almost every day here and nothing will change. Our government will continue to help all the other countries that need help but let our homeless and hungry starve and die. They could care less about us as long as they help other countries they can sleep at night. I say all the American homeless, starving, sick go knock on your local politicians door and ask for food, shelter and health care!

                  I agree ShawnC30:
I do not think we are wrong in helping Georgia but I personally know we have many who come to our hospital for care that are uninsured and very ill, one of the big concerns they have is how they are going to pay the bill. They have been layed off from a good job and are now working part time here and there to try to hold it together. The elderly are living by scrimping and going without in some cases...do they buy food this week or medicine?? And many are at risk of losing there homes because prices are skyrocketing (food, utilities, property taxes, etc) and the money they put back has dwindled away to the monthly Social Security and if they are lucky a pension check, but those covered everything back in 1985 when they retired. Now they are in mid to late 80 years of age and those same funds don't cover todays costs. We need to take care of our own first, once we become stable and secure as a nation then maybe we can begin to help others. I guess it is OK for a Grandmother to not take her blood pressure medication or her diabetes meds so she can pay the power bill as long as we can give billions to other countries....it makes no sense to me at all. I thought we were brought up to take care of our own??

How can you guys not think helping Georgia is wrong????? This is wrong on SO MANY LEVELS! First, Georgia was the aggressor! Georgia attacked the republics that wanted to return to Russia, in the middle of the night, with the US admin's blessing no doubt, and now are twisting it to make it seem like Russia is the bad guy here! And Cheney has the nerve to say their meeting is "in the shadow of the Russian invasion of Georgia." Ummmm, anyone who reads the articles pertaining to this story can easily see this is a blatant lie to steer anger toward Russia.

And Doesn't any one else here find it disgusting that Cheney met with international oil executives before arriving in Azerbaijan, which just so happens to be the richest oil reserve in that region????? This administration is so emboldened with their arrogance that they are no longer even bothering to cover up their conspiracies and crimes against us. Disgusting!

I live in South Fl, and right now there are 3 hurricanes that are coming this way off the Atlantic. If we get hit, my office closes and I don't get paid. I am one of those millions of Americans that live paycheck to paycheck. I, and thousands more like me, will be royally screwed monetarily if we get hit by Hanna, Ike, or Josephine, not to mention the potential destruction if we get pounded. It makes me sick that the government will give a billion dollar handout to a country none of us will ever even visit, yet won't help Americans pay their bills if disaster hits. I am so mad right now I think I might spontaneously combust!

Sorry about your problem. It is very frustrating to know that our administration that is suppose to help us WON'T. Just the other day, I was talking to my supervisor about our work schedule. I told him, I don't care what hours I work because right now I am very lucky to have a job. he looked at me like I was crazy. I guess if you don't watch the news that often you don't know what is going on. If you really and truly want to go to Iraq, join the Army, if you are of age and can pass the physical. My daughter is in the process of doing that. her soon to be ex was getting over $800 in housing allowance (tax free, if I remember correctly). they are paying the military alot more now than when my husband was in. My son is a E-5 in the Navy and makes more money than I do (while on shore duty) no sea pay or sub pay in that. I think alot of our laid off americans should run to our nearest recruiter and sign up. let the government actually take care of you while doing a service for your country. I am not happy with our government when they give away money that we need to survive but I really and truly love our country as a whole and would not live anywhere else.

I completely agree. I am the wife of a soldier that is in Iraq as we speak. Unemployed, healthy Americans should really look to joining the Army. Not only do they pay for your housing, they also provide health insurance for your entire family if you are on active duty status that you don't pay anything out-of-pocket for. We are not rich, by any stretch of the imagination, but we are doing very well and he's only currently an E-4. Heck, why not get paid and have insurance paid for? We love the Army life. Of course it has its CONS, but, what job doesn't?

This is just an aside, but since you are from the state of Georgia, did anyone mention in passing why that country and your state have the same name? Just coincidence of 2 kings named George, or what?

i not only blame the current administration, which we all know how that sad story goes, but also congress, which is democratic led!! its clear that neither of the two reigning parties in Washington have our best interest at heart.

keep that billion here and give us better health care for starters!

The blame starts way back. The current admin has not helped but they can't take all the blame. Every Administration has sent money somewhere other than here. I do agree we need a better health care system.

Right now the congress in both houses are not veto proof thus the president and the republicans can styme any legistlation they choose. Its amazing that they can all think the same when an issue comes up.

a little out there? Can you say the current choices are any better? The country needed someone to toss out old ideas and try fresh new ones. The status quo is not working today. People can not think outside the box. This country is headed for utter collapse and people treat the election like a popularity contest from high school. The best thing we could do for this country is do away with the party system. Force people to judge candidates on where they stand and who they are regardless of party. It is too easy for people to become so deeply rooted in party politics that they begin to seem like sheep led to the slaughter. And never become the wiser. It's sad that we can't get a person with strong ethics and common sense that doesn't have to be a millionaire. Do you think ANY of these financially wealthy people care about any of us lesser endowed? They will ALWAYS look out for themselves first and not our country. Does money make you more capable of running our country? Does money make you a better person? 1 billion in aid to ANY country other than our own right now is appalling to say the least. But let's consider how much has been wasted on this election process. That is truly absurd. Elect me to office and we'll get our country on the right path!!!

You all have such short memories. It was John Kasich who worked with Bill Clinton to shut down military bases and cut spending to try and make the Regan dream of paying-off the national debt come true. All that welfair reform on the poorest Americans while they continue to give money and tax breaks to big corporations. Where is John now; oh yea, he was thrown out for all his hard work. Thanks for taking care of your own Republicans. Then Bush and the Republican Congress started spending money like drunken sailors. Guess that's as close as they will come to being military.

Look, it makes no difference which party is "in charge".

BOTH parties send billions of US taxpayer money over seas every year. It's only the details that change.

This isn't about Dems v. GOP this is about a government that is out of control.

Partisan politics is a distraction (we actually have more in common than many would believe) and is used to keep We the People divided and pointing fingers at each other.

If we could actually send a message to both parties that ignoring us is unacceptable we might get the government we actually deserve.

I would bet my last dollar (which is coming faster than I can make it) that they ALL still own their homes, cars, motorcycles, planes, boats, etc. and still go on vacations.

No health care plan...just trying to fine eye candy to sit beside McCain again. Ms McCain is getting up there also. All the candidates mostly were Senators so what is the big deal that Obama is. Next election they will only need a GED, live in a town of 500 population and a soccer mom.

Our country is in heavy debt to China, our economy is in shambles, illegal immigrants are sucking the life out of cities and towns, our soldiers are risking their lives for sub-par wages and some even qualify for food-stamps, our roads and bridges are falling apart, property and school taxes are skyrocketing, etc, and yet we find money to send to other countries at the expense of the American people. When are we going to stop being the police and piggy bank of the world? I see that VP Cheney is making a trip to Georgia to assess the situation. More likely he is licking his chops trying to see where his companies can make billions of dollars in the rebuild. I don't know about you, but this infuriates me to no end.

                                  NO S@#T!!!! Me too!!!

However, seeing as all WE, THE PEOPLE do is complain on message boards, we can't expect anything to be done. We need to contact our congressmen and senators to let them know how we feel. Call, send e-mails and letters EVERY DAY. Organize PEACEFUL demonstrations to let the people WE elect know how we feel. I send several e-mails and make several phone calls to each congressman and senator a few times a week. They are usually the same letter (why not, they use form letters to respond) and same message, but at least I can pester them about what I care about!

Tired - come next summer, after whoever gets sworn in in January, if there are no improvements then I think that is a great idea. My guess is everything - economy, war bill, health care issues, national and foreign debt - will worsen. Then more people will be inclined to rally/protest. We'll see soon enough!

No kidding.. we would have to BORROW money from some other country to give to them... just like we had to BORROW money from another country to give our people stimulus checks to "build the economy back up." Too bad most people paid bills with that stimulus check instead of buying TVs and stuff.

Georgia will probably get that 8 to 9 $B eventually if Russia ever does leave. Think they need a replacement for Saakashvili though, he's too much of a liability with too many political and border enemies. Maybe Kezerashvili will replace him.

It is both the Rep and Dem but Congress is the one coming up with all the spending as of late Billion to fight aids, in Africa (like any of those people see the money there government is almost as corrupt as ours. We are rebuilding have the middle east and they have tri. in profit's from oil. million to fight drug and crime in Mexico hell start here at home to fight that stuff. we can start by sending home the illegls and closing the boards now not in a week not in a month now. We need to make some changes quickly our people are out of work and need help. the working class can no long pay for all there spending and it everyone in Washington they spend like nothing I have ever seen before and the worst part is that they barrow the money to do it on our backs. It time to take our government back that is a fact. we now have taxation with out reparation and that what made it necessary to have the last tea party well folks it tea time again. Our government is for big business , special interest group and them self (the elected politicians) Time to vote every one out of office put term limits , if they take graft and that what it is there gone and do jail time. business and special interest groups have bought and paid for our elected congress sen. and president so if you want change vote there butt out all them.

                                        Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Not again. When are we going to learn? Isn't aiding other countries in their military conflicts, or providing "humanitarian aid" what got us 9/11, Vietnam, the Iranian hostage situation, or any number of other retaliatory acts? Didn't we learn to mind our own business? If they pull that garbage on American soil, then we'll have a reason to get involved. Otherwise, we're just asking for trouble.

That money should be spent on the American elderly. Maybe one of these places hit by a hurricane could use $1 billion.

We, the bottom feeders vote for rich people to help us out. What a joke. Wake up American, our system is failing us because the rich are leading us. Who cares whether we have food on our tables? I don't understand how we can send funds to another country and we are still in a recession.
We have people losing their homes by the day to foreclosures. We have schools with no books and supplies. We have people who are getting laid off by the day on their jobs. What is the problem here?
Why can't another country send aid, I don't get it $1 Billion. That makes me sick to my stomach. Send them $1 Million Dollars and call it a day. Let other countries come to rescue. We have a ridiculous deficit, but we still send $1Billion to them. Georgia and Russia have to work out their own differences. We cannot save the world.

That is why I have been asking that we look at the issues that we the American people are facing today. I was a decorated Marine in Viet Nam but that was 40 years ago and I am tired of hearing about it. Now I am concerned about my kids, my family, and my Country. All we are doing is policing the world at our expense and when they get in trouble we send our tax money to bail them out. I knew we were up to something as soon as I read our sneaky VP was in Georgia.

Agree with it or not Obama has laid out his economic plan, let's make McCain do the same thing then compare them. We all love our troops and our Country but let's keep both strong and safe. Let's deal with the reality not history, Palins kids, race, gender, or Political party. OUR number one priority has to be America. Rather than slamming each other because we have been conditioned to believe in a party, we need to be mandating that the candidates explain the issues we are all facing now or soon will be. This election has to be about the issues. We cannot continue the path we are on now.

The money Bush is giving away is money that would be better use for the people in our own country. I live in New England and many people that i know are tyring to figure out how their going to pay for heating fuel this winter. Schools being closed because of poor repair. Homeless shelters turning people away because of lack of funding. I say its time we looked to our own.

Our leaders allow corporate america to have tax breaks, cut our benefits, cut our wages, cut our jobs, outsource our jobs, allow illegals to enter our countries, then allow our employers to hire these illegals. What is going wrong with American. The rich is leading!

Truth is, the U.S. armed, funded and encouraged the Georgian misadventure and now feels obligated to offer humanitarian in order to assuage our guilt. And the use of warships is additional provocation toward the Russians. Another cold war will enhance the politics of fear, so well practiced by the current adminstration. The military industrial complex must be overjoyed.

Can you seriously expect the Europeans to risk offending the Russians? Russian controls most of the energy inflow into western europe.

Meddling in the affairs of other countries produces nothing but contempt and has brought down many a civilization. Will we ever learn? apparently not.

Israel was an important supplier of arms and training to Georgia, until Russia suggested that they stop. Several Georgian cabinet ministers are Jews with close ties to Israel (e.g., the Defense Minister).

This is what really P****s me off about the US government. We can sure step in and help out other countries and then cry about the debt ratio.

We need to step back and take stock of our own. I know it's good to help out and that's what we can do - is help out - the problem is "we" - the US government, ends up taking over and doing everything and expect that that is okay - that every other country needs to be and do things like us. They aren't like us and they never will be.

I agree with the rest of you about our economy - what a mess. Someone else needs to control "the bag of gold" - someone with some restraint and commonsense.

Now there's the situation in the south from the storm - what do you think is going to happen there - I'll bet they will have to wait until Georgia gets relief and THEN if there is any money available they get help.

The next time you hear Bush use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about whether you want these politicians spending your tax money.

                                                          A billion...

                                                          - A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
                                                          - A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
                                                          - A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
                                                          - A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

Three of the things mentioned are directlly related to one thing. Big Business!!!

Big business does not pay their fair share of taxes so you pay more unless you are rich percentage wise.

Big business needs illegals so they are here and thats a double whammy. First they pay no taxes. Second all the money except what they live on is sent to their country draining this coutry.

Third job outsourcing only benefits big business the consumer get a price increase. These people who take the jobs out of the country I call illegal also.

Fourth Big business tax breaks for offshore business.

Neocons control the republican party. It was their war in Iraq. They support Israel too much. They want to rule the world which is not going to happen. We cannot be the police force for the world.

I cannot see how 40% of the people in this country can support more of the same.

Time to get smart forget the slick ads and take back your country

And much of this is to undermine the unions. They have restricted the right of unions to organize and bring in cheep labor to break the industries. Why do you think Walfart is still non-union? My father was a craftsman in southern California and made a good living before Bush 1 gave the illegals amnesty. They have ruined the trades and destroyed many of the good paying jobs we used to enjoy.
